When you get credit card offers in the mail you should always read them closely. The terms for each company tend to be different and you could end up paying a lot for the simple pleasure of having a credit card. Here are some tips on how to compare credit cards.
Most cards charge a yearly fee and interest. If you have to choose between a lower yearly fee and lower interest it can be a tough choice. You should have a budget and consider how much you will be charging on your credit card on a normal basis. If you card is strictly for emergencies then the higher interest rate may be best.
Incentives such as discounts and road side service look great on paper. When it comes to paying the monthly bill they may not look so good. If the card has a lot of incentives but a higher rate or fees then it may be best to pass on them and go with something a bit more affordable.
The limit is another big factor but should take a back burner to the other fees. You should also be careful not to let yourself get cards with high limits that you may never be able to pay off. Keep in mind that the more you charge the more your minimum monthly payment will be. You can get in trouble quick if you can’t pay and then the interest rate tends to spike.
An alternative to regular credit cards are pre paid credit cards. They work the same and are accepted just as easily as any other credit cards. With these the fees are minimal and there are no monthly fees, no interest, and no credit checks. You simply add money to them as you like and you can set the amount to help you budget. Also these are good for online purchases when you don’t want to use your regular credit card.
When you compare credit cards remember that your credit score plays a big role and can be affected by abusing credit cards. Always look close at the fine print and know what fees you will be paying.
